Galilei, Galileo, 1564-1642.
Fiorenza, Per Gio: Batista Landini, 1632
Galileo championed the sun-centered model of the solar system, helped supply new evidence for it by his pioneering use of the telescope, and argued effectively the merits of the new system in works aimed not merely at astronomers but also at the educated public. Galileo used the technique of writing in the form of a scholarly debate to present both sides in an unsuccessful attempt to avoid violating the Catholic Church's ban on advocating the Copernican theory of planetary motion.
