Exhibit 2001 Kendall/Butler
Kendall, E. Otis, 1818 - 1899.
Uranography: or, A description of the heavens; designed for academies and schools; accompanied by an atlas of the heavens, showing the places of the principal stars, clusters, and nebulae.
Philadelphia ; Butler & Williams, 1844.
This Uranography, "a description of the heavens designed for academies and schools" published by Ezra Otis Kendall in Philadelphia in 1844, shows the transition of constellations from artistic depictions of animals and mythological figures to areas of the sky delineated by boundaries. Today astronomers view constellations as "mere real estate" in the sky. Some of the constellation names and images Kendall uses here, such as "the electrical machine," are no longer used.
If you had to name it, what would you call "the electrical machine?"
