Johannes Bayer, a German lawyer and amateur astronomer, created the modern method of naming stars in his Uranometria (1603), a pioneering catalog of constellations. This edition dates from 1661. Prior to this time maps of the constellations tended to move stars to fit the pictures rather than show their true positions.
