Alfred University Summer Institute in Astronomy Award |
Description
Deadline extended to April 6, 2007
The purpose of this award
is to support attendance of a high school student from the Capital District at
the at the Summer Institute in Astronomy at Alfred University. The Dudley
Observatory will pay registration fees, and room and board for the winning
student for this five-day program.
The
Astronomy Institute is conducted at the
Stull Observatory
on the Alfred University Campus. This facility has been judged to be one of the
best teaching observatories in the country, and is equipped with telescopes
ranging from 8 to 32 inches in diameter as well as electronic detectors and
support computers. The number of institute participants is kept small to allow
for individualized attention and optimal use of the observatory's telescopes and
other equipment.

scheduled for July 22nd - 26th,
2007.

Each
applicant must submit:

A completed copy of Dudley
Observatory's Application for Award form (PDF Version
Word Version)
·
A one-page
essay telling us why you want to attend this institute
·
Two
confidential letters of recommendation from teachers
·
an up-to-date transcript (to
January 2007)
Selection Procedure
Judging among the
applicants will be by the Education Awards Committee of the Board of Trustees of
Dudley Observatory. The results will be announced in mid-April.
Winner will receive
additional materials from Alfred University, including medical forms, liability
releases, emergency notification forms, etc. These materials must be returned to
Alfred University
Office of Summer Programs
no later than two weeks prior to the start of the institute, or the student will
not be permitted to attend. Updated immunization information (including dates)
is also required at that time.
For
full consideration, applications must be
received by Dudley Observatory by February 15th
