Educational Awards and Grants |
The Dudley Observatory supports activities in New
York's Capital Region aimed at increasing understanding of astronomy and its
history. Educational activities include the following.
The
Rising Star Internship Program helps high school students learn
about observational astronomy and the use and care of small telescopes.

The Albert Hessberg II Astronomy Campership Award, provides
opportunities for high school students in their sophomore or junior years to
participate in the Advanced Astronomy Camp at the University of Arizona,
Tucson. The Award honors the late Albert Hessberg II, Esq., longtime member
of the Board of Trustees. Limited to high schools in the Capital District of
the State of New York, including Albany, Fulton, Montgomery, Rensselaer,
Saratoga, Schenectady or Washington counties.

The Alfred University Summer Institute in Astronomy Award
award supports attendance
of a high school student from the Capital District at the at the Summer
Institute in Astronomy at Alfred University. The Dudley Observatory will
pay registration fees, and room and board for the winning student for this
five-day program.

Reflections: Stories of
Astronomy, Earth and Space:
In the pilot of this oral history project, students interviewed people
affiliated with the Dudley Observatory to get a glimpse of the frustrations
and passions in the real lives of scientists, at the same time, preserving
the history of the Observatory.
Dudley Observatory Prize
of the New York State Archives Student Research
Awards The New
York State Archives runs this annual event to encourage student research
using historical records. The Dudley Observatory, which recently celebrated
its 150th Anniversary, is offering additional prizes for research
done in the Dudley Observatory Archives.

Through the Rita Spenser Space Campership Award, the Dudley Observatory provides
opportunities for high school students in the Capital Region to gain
exciting summer experiences involving astronomy and the space program by
attending the U.S. Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama.

Through the Roy E. Anderson
Media Award, the Dudley Observatory supports radio and television
programs about astronomy, including the presentation of the
Stardate radio program on
station WAMC (90.3 FM) and the
Star Gazer
television program on WMHT.
Through the Charles P. Bean Fund,
the Dudley Observatory supports activities in astronomy education including
visits by thousands of children annually to the
Schenectady Museum
and Planetarium and the
Henry Hudson Planetarium.

the Astronomical Society of New York (ASNY),
