This series is the largest of the Dudley Observatory
collection, containing over 800 file folders. It contains the
existing records of the grants obtained and the contract work
performed by the Dudley Observatory in the period 1959 to 1987.
Each sub-series will be described separately. [16.5 lin. ft. -

Proposals
(rejected) 1962-1982
This sub-series consists of grant and contract proposals that
were rejected by the organization applied to. The majority of
proposals were made either to the National Science Foundation
or to NASA. Correspondence concerning the proposal, including
rejection letters, is filed with some proposals. Arrangement of
this sub-series is first chronological, then by name of
principal investigator and lastly by organization. [99
folders]
Forms, procedures,
etc. 1964-1987
Standard forms, manuals, reporting procedures and other
materials from the contracting or granting organization that
would be applicable to all their contracts form the bulk of
this sub-series. Materials relating to specific grants or
contracts are filed with the appropriate series. Documents from
NSF, NASA and DOD are included. [13 folders]
Correspondence;
Vouchers 1967-1985
These two sub-series contain general correspondence and
vouchers that are not linked to a specific grant or contract.

Grants
1961-1984
This sub-series is comprised of the administrative records,
the reports and the existing research data that were produced
under grants given to Dudley Observatory by various
organizations. The majority of grants were given by NASA and
NSF, but there were also grants from the Environmental
Protection Agency and the New York State Science &
Technology Foundation. The most important grant from NASA,
"Micrometeorite collection and analysis" ran from 1961 to the
mid-1970s. A complete listing of the grants
and contracts with
dates and titles can be found in Appendix 2. This sub-series is
arranged chronologically by the beginning date of the grant.
Within each grant, the administrative records, including
proposals, reports, correspondence and financial records
precede the research data. The administrative records are
arranged by type and chronologically within type. The research
data is arranged roughly by experiment or by type of data. Most
of the research records for the Sesame and Magellan projects
include photographs of micrometeorites and the results of
various tests done on them. Enlargements and negatives of many
of the photographs can be found in the Photo
Lab series. Some of the physical samples are still housed
in a cabinet in the Observatory Archives. [473

Contracts
1959-1978
The Contracts sub-series contains records similar to those of
the Grants sub-series, the major difference being the funding
mechanism and the reporting requirements. In general, contracts
required closer supervision and more frequent financial
reporting. Like Grants, this sub-series is arranged
chronologically by the date that the contract began. Within
each contract, administrative materials precede any research
records. There is only one contract (NAS 9-10380) that has
significant amounts of research data. This was the contract to
put experiment S-149 (collection of micrometeorite particles)
aboard Skylab. Contractors include NASA, the Air Force
Cambridge Research Laboratory, Revere and the Office of Naval
Research. [246 folders]
NASA Tape transcripts
1966, 1973-1974
The transcripts of the communications between NASA ground
control and Gemini and Skylab crews comprise this series. The
Gemini 12 flight occurred in November 1966 and carried the S-10
and S-12 experiments from Dudley. The Skylab tapes cover the
period from November, 1973 to September 1974.
