Saratoga and Columbia High School
Students Win Astronomy Awards
Ben Herbert, a junior at Saratoga Springs Senior High School and
James Dolan, a sophomore at Columbia High School, have won the Year
2000 Hessberg Astronomy Camperships, awarded by the Dudley
Observatory. The presentation ceremony will take place at the
Schenectady Museum and Planetarium on Tuesday, April 24 at 4pm.
The Award, named for the late Albert Hessberg II, Capital Region
civic leader and long-time trustee of the Dudley Observatory,
provides the winners with a research experience in astronomy at the
Advanced Astronomy Camp in Tucson, Arizona. There students from
across the nation take part in hands-on astronomical projects, using
the large telescopes on Mt. Lemmon and Mt. Bigelow near Tucson, under
the supervision of astronomers at the Seward Observatory of the
University of Arizona. The Award pays all costs, including
transportation, for the Capital District winners.
The Astronomy Campership award is presented annually. Competition
is open to high-school sophomores and juniors in Albany, Fulton,
Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady or Washington counties.
Students are nominated by their schools, and the winner is chosen by
the Education Awards Committee of the Dudley Observatory.
The Dudley Observatory is a private foundation supporting research
and education in astronomy, astrophysics and the history of
astronomy. Founded in 1852, it is the oldest private organization in
the U. S. supporting astronomical research. It is located in
Schenectady, New York.
