Colleen Gino Appointed Director
of Dudley Observatory
Ms. Colleen Gino has been appointed director of the Dudley
Observatory, the nation's oldest independent organization dedicated
to research and education in astronomy and its history. The
appointment, announced by the Observatory's Board of Trustees today,
places Ms. Gino in a position held in the past by some of the
nation's most distinguished astronomers, beginning with Benjamin A.
Gould, the first American to hold a Ph.D. in astronomy, and the
founder of the nation's longest-running scientific publication in the
field, The Astronomical Journal. Ms. Gino is the first woman
to hold the directorship in the Observatory's 150 year history. In
that post, she will guide the Observatory as it undertakes new
initiatives in the fields of astronomical research and education.
Ms. Gino has worked professionally at some of the nation's
outstanding observatories, including Mt. Wilson Observatory in
California, and the Very Large Array Radio Telescope in New Mexico.
Her findings and astronomical photographs have appeared in some of
the leading scientific journals, and she is active in astronomy
education and at bringing to the public lively and knowledgeable
introductions to the wonders of the heavens. In announcing the
appointment, Susan French, astronomer and president of the Dudley
Observatory Board of Trustees, noted that "Colleen's combination of
astronomical skills, enthusiasm, and versatility makes her an ideal
person to lead the Observatory as it expands its research and
education initiatives to meet the challenges and opportunities of the
21st century."
