Dudley Observatory
Annual Appeal 2009

We take credit, too*

Dudley Observatory is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, and your contribution is tax-deductible!

Friends and Neighbors,

Jupiter is shining brightly in the south, and the setting stars of the Summer Triangle remind us that the year is drawing to a close. While you contemplating the wonders above, please consider making a year-end tax-deductible contribution as your investment in the Dudley Observatory.

*as well as cash and checks!

(You can download a mail-in form here).

Thanks to hard work and our fabulous supporters, we have had a wonderful year!

Some of our Successes:

  • We have fourteen new Rising Star Interns - students and teachers who introduce thousands of others to the pleasures of star gazing at free, public star parties.
  • Attendance tripled at this year's outstanding Skywatch lectures.
  • Grants received also tripled this year!
  • Our new "How to use your telescope" programs transformed "mysterious dusty objects" into stargazing tools.
  • Professional development workshops for educators will blast off, with the aid of a NASA grant.
  • Even more local students will become involved with Dudley thanks to grants that provide after-school programs for the Schenectady Boys & Girls Clubs.
  • Our "Reflections" oral history interviews continue to be an inspiration to teachers, students, and all associated with this unique program.
  • Dudley has become a popular spot for high school and college student volunteers in photography, archives, digitization, oral history, website & social networking, and, of course, astronomy!
  • Cataloging of our observatory publications collection by the Capital District Library Council is nearing completion.
  • An exhibit in Albany Visitors Center celebrates the Henry Hudson 400th Anniversary.
  • We just formed an astrophotography and research group for adults & teens.
  • The significant increase in the number of volunteers highlighted above has enabled us to accomplish all of these things (and more) with only a 7% increase in our expenses.

Get a BIG BANG for your Buck!

Operating Dudley Observatory isn't free, but it is incredibly cost-effective! The Dudley "team" consists of one full-time employee and our stellar volunteers and supporters. We don't think you will find anywhere else where your donation dollars get stretched so far and do so much! Your tax-deductible investment in the Dudley Observatory will ensure that the legacy continues.

Thank you and best wishes for a wonderful new year!

Clear Skies,
Janie Schwab
